History
After releasing quite a few multi-games arcade machines that were button operated, Merit's released in 1993 the "Pitboss Supertouch 30" in two different formats: Upright and Countertop.

With the release of the "Pitboss Megatouch" software update, a Cabaret version of the machine was also introduced. After this release, Merit abandoned the Pitboss brand and instead released the following updates only using the Megatouch brand.

The platform was long-lived, as it received new software releases up until the year 2000.

Hardware Versions
The "Pitboss Supertouch 30" was based on the same platform as their previous button-operated machines, the CRT-250 which was Z80-based.

This platform did get a small upgrade (CRT-260) in 1994, which integrated some of the separate optional boards that existed for the CRT-250 into the main board and added the possibility of linking two machines together ("Megalink").

For more details, check each machine's sub-page.

Software Releases
The platform was well supported with software updates (which were stored in chips, as the machines didn't support any other kind of media) up until the year 2000 with the release of the "Megatouch 7 Encore Edition".

Most new releases included new question sets for quiz games and a couple new games. Each software release had multiple variants, due to different state regulations. Some of these variants had some of the games removed and some changed certain parts of the software to comply with said regulations.
For the protection on the classic generation machines, Merit used a Dallas DS1204 Electronic Key. The key not only prevented piracy but was also used to define which variant the machine ran.
What is GamesWiki.org?
GamesWiki.org is part of TAP(P) (Touchscreen Arcade Preservation (Project), pun intended), which is a community project to preserve the various Touchscreen-based Arcade Machines. From the most unknown like Presas Evolution to the most popular ones like Merit’s Megatouch line of machines, every machine (as long as it’s not a gambling machine) has a place in TAPP.

The project was started on the 13th of August of 2023, after a friend of mine told me “Wouldn’t it be nice to run (Funworld’s) Photo Play in a PC?”. After searching the web for a while, I noticed that there is an huge lack of available information on some of the machines, while others (notably Megatouch) are very well documented with Service Manuals, et al being available.

As most of the companies that created and sold these kinds of machines went under, were bought or simply disappeared, the availability of documentation and software \ restore images was very limited and scattered amongst various different websites.

Not only that, but the majority of this machines are 20+ years old, so parts are starting to fail and getting replacements is either hard and \ or expensive, so more common and cheaper alternatives are needed.

One great example are the Megatouch Security Keys, normally a Dallas DS1991L-F5 which has a lifespan of 10 years. They can’t be (at least easily) cloned, and while most of them are already 20 something years old and still running (I have a couple of MAXX 2K Security Keys from 2000 that are still working!). As such, ways to be able to play without a fully working security key \ dongle are needed if we would like the platforms to be preserved.

The project has 4 goals. They are going to be a continuous effort:

* Document and research all the Machines and their software.
* Archive software releases and utilities for all the Machines / Systems.
* Find sources of original parts and research into compatible parts.
* Find reasonable / cheaper ways for people to be able to experience the systems as most of them were only distributed on certain regions.

Follow along (and contribute if you can) in this journey with us! Shoot us an [mailto://xeon3d@gameswiki.org email] if you want to help \ contribute.

History
Merit Industries, Inc., was established in 1977 in Bensalem, Pennsylvania.

In the early 1980s they started developing their own standalone video games, with around a dozen of poker machines being released in this decade. Their 1994 "Pit Boss: Supertouch 30" release started the Megatouch range of touch machines that ended up becoming a market leader in the US.

In 2002, the Harbour Group acquired Merit Industries. This division was combined with jukebox maker Rowe International to become AMI Entertainment Network in 2004. Megatouch, LLC was spun into its own entity in 2013 and closed in 2014.
The software running on their machines could be upgraded by buying a kit consisting of a Security Key and some kind of storage media (ROM Chips for earlier releases, CD\DVD-ROMs for the later ones). It was also possible to upgrade some machines from a specific generation to the next one (ex.: MAXX to Force), where the kit would also include additional hardware (motherboard and I/O card).

<u>GamesWiki is looking for talented DOS reverse engineers so that we can create tools and patches for DOS based versions of MAXX and Force. If you're interested, please contact us.</u>

Megatouch Security Keys were, as the name implies, security keys that have a couple of different functions:

* Region-lock: As in, software for some regions (New Jersey for example) had specific features that had to be turned on for the Megatouch software to be legal in that jurisdiction.
* Version-lock: A version (and it's subsequent point-release) could only be run if a key of the same version was attached to the IO Board. For example, you can not run Maxx Jade with a Maxx Diamond key.

Hardware:
They are Dallas Keys or iButtons can be used for multiple purposes as there are many variants of it.

The type used in earlier Megatouch versions is the DS1991, a battery-powered chip with 1,152-bit secure read/write, nonvolatile memory. Said memory is partitioned into 3 blocks of 384 bits each, which are protected by a 64-bit password. Each key also has a 512-bit scratchpad. Their datasheet say they offer "over 10-year" retention.

Later (starting with 2007 versions) they started using the DS1995L-F5 version of the keys which has the following differences:

* 16384 bits of read/write nonvolatile memory
* Overdrive mode boosts communication speed to 142 kbits per second
* 256-bit scratchpad.
* Memory partitioned into 256-bit pages.

Merit's Part Numbers:
Megatouch Security Keys game version can (normally) easily be identified by looking at the Merit Part Number, which is normally printed on a sticker in the plastic holder which follows the format SA3xxx-yy where xxxx is the model and yy is the region of the key.

A list of known Megatouch Security Key Part Numbers has been graciously compiled by Mike of meritgames.com which you can access here.

I (Xeon3D) am currently in possession of a couple of keys which have part numbers that do not follow the SA3xxx-yy format (as they don't start with SA3).

Both of them are for Megatouch Jade, one with part number SA1020-01 and the other with SA0020-01. They both boot the Jade software without an issue and no noticeable differences are found.

Key Death & Solutions:
This "over 10-year" retention is quite important, as when the data is lost due to battery depletion, the games will not start. There are keys, known to be at least 25 years old, still working. There are also reports of quite younger keys already depleted. Do note that the serial number doesn't ever get erased, only the encrypted data.

Due to this, some solutions have appeared, namely:

* KeySaver - A Linux module that when installed will dump key contents and serial number into a file. As long as a key with the matching serial number is installed, the game will boot and work normally as keycontents are read from the file instead of the key itself.
* Keyless Patches - Patches made by another member of the community that make the software able to boot normally as key contents and serial are dumped to a file (similarly to KeySaver) but game is patched to read both from said file, unlike KeySaver which always reads Serial from key. This allows games to be booted with just an empty IO Board as long as hardware matches.
* IOBoardless Patches - Similar to Keyless patches, these also dump some IOBoard data to files, making it possible to run the software without any IOBoard.
* Megatouch Force Key of Death bypass instructions by www.arcade-cabinets.com (dead)

Unfortunately, these only work for Linux-based versions of Megatouch namely:

- Megatouch MAXX Ruby, Ruby 2, Sapphire, Sapphire 2, Jade, Jade 2 & Crown,

- Megatouch Force 2003 onwards (not 2002)

- Megatouch ION (all versions).

Patches:
Note that patches are all for Force 2004. Patches for Force 2004.5 should be similar.

Patching Force 2004 to boot on non-Merit Motherboards
Force 2004 checks to see if it's booting on an official Megatouch Force Motherboard (aka the ECS P6IWP-Fe 2.0 / PCChips/Hsin Tech M771LMR 2.0). If not, it'll show an "Invalid Motherboard Detected!!!" error message and stop booting.

To fix that, decrypt /usr/local/bin/start, open up the file in a Hex Editor and replace the following:
+Force 2004 Motherboard Check Location
Offset
0xFC82D
75
EB

One way to trick the HDD Model Check:
Add the following to any script that runs before the main game start is executed:

echo MERIT0011 > /tmp/hd

mount -v -n -o bind /tmp/hd /proc/ide/ide0/hda/model

Booting Force 2004 on non Megatouch Hardware:
Force 2004 checks to see if you're running an official Merit Hard Disk and a Force SMT-4 Touchcontroller (similar to SMT-3, but with a black container instead of white), and if it detects it's not, it will boot the game as MAXX.

To fix this, decrypt /usr/local/bin/start, open up the file in a Hex Editor, and replace the following:
+Force 2004 HDD/Touchscreen Check Locations
